In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, President Biden is expected to impose travel restrictions on India starting Tuesday, May 4, barring most non-U.S. citizens from entering the United States.
These restrictions come on the advice of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and are imposed in light of extraordinarily high COVID-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in India. A formal announcement is expected today and the policy will take effect on May 4 at 12:01 a.m. ET.
In January, President Biden issued a similar ban on most non-U.S. citizens entering the United States after recent travel to South Africa. He also reimposed an entry ban on almost all non-U.S. travelers who have been to Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the 26 European countries that allow travel across open borders.
This policy means most non-U.S. citizens who have visited one of these countries, including India, within the last 14 days are not eligible to enter the United States. The policy also covers Iran and China.
