It’s always good practice to periodically take stock of your online presence. Write down every social media-type site where you have a profile that contains any personal information. Various free background check services can help jog your memory if needed.

Following the same rules that apply to cleaning out your wardrobe, for each of those social media sites – no matter how much it hurts – deactivate or delete your account if:

  1. You no longer love it.
  2. It is overly trendy (and the trend has passed).
  3. It hasn’t fit who you are in over a year.
  4. You haven’t accessed it in over a year.
  5. It no longer fits your style.
