United States Senators Boozman (R-Arkansas), Capito (R-West Virginia), and Carper (D-Delaware) announced the development of legislation titled:

Recycling and Composting Accountability Act (“Act”)

Senators Boozman and Capito serve as Co-Chairs of the United States Senate Recycling Caucus.

Senator Carper serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

The objectives of the bill include:

  • Improve the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to gather data on United States recycling systems
  • Explore opportunities for implementing a national composting strategy

Senator Boozman, in commenting on the legislation, stated:

. . . We have the ability to improve our nation’s recycling infrastructure and better leverage the economic and environmental benefits of recycling and composting . . . one of the biggest obstacles facing recycling is the lack of reliable and consistent data . . .

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee held a hearing to discuss domestic recycling and composting on February 2nd. The previously referenced co-sponsors heard testimony at the hearing from industry leaders as to their views on long-term solutions to recycling challenges in the United States.
