The Obama administration is gauging interest in wind power development off the coast of New York, after a state agency proposed an offshore project 11 nautical miles south of Long Beach. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued a request for any competing interests in the proposed lease area, which covers about 127 square miles. If no other parties express interest, the New York Power Authority can get a lease on a non- competitive basis.

The Board of Public Works on Wednesday unanimously approved a contract that will allow the state to survey land ten miles off the coast of Ocean City for use as an offshore wind farm. St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Coastal Planning & Engineering Inc. will “conduct a high-resolution geophysical survey” of the area designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior as the area where energy-producing wind turbines could be built.

Warren Buffett's MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. agreed to spend as much as $2.5 billion to build two solar projects in California that are set to be the world's largest photovoltaic development. MidAmerican acquired the Antelope Valley projects in Kern and Los Angeles counties, with a combined generation capacity of 579 megawatts, from SunPower Corp. San Jose, California-based SunPower will operate and maintain the development via a multiyear services agreement.

Alexander & Baldwin Inc. has completed construction on the largest solar generation facility in Hawaii — its 6-megawatt photovoltaic farm at Port Allen on Kauai’s westside. The project, which is located on 20 acres of land owned by A&B nearby Kauai Island Utility Cooperative’s Port Allen Station power plant, began delivering power to the utility on Dec. 7.

Sempra Energy and BP Plc completed a 21-megawatt wind farm in Hawaii, their fifth project together in an agreement to build more than 1,000 megawatts of renewable power capacity. The Auwahi Wind farm in southeast Maui will produce power for the island’s utility under a 20-year contract.
