Spinal Cord Injuries And Paralysis: Recovery Is A Team Effort

One of the most devastating forms of injury that can be suffered by an accident victim in Alabama or anywhere else is a spinal cord injury. Depending on which point along the spine the damage occurs, the life-altering effects of spinal cord injuries and paralysis will require a degree of prolonged rehabilitation in order to minimize the chances of complications and to enable the victim to rejoin their family and community. In addition to the degree of rehabilitation time required, there is also the important role played by the makeup of the rehabilitation team.

Obviously, the victim and his or her immediate family will be much involved in the recovery and a return to familiar surroundings, but many others will also be assisting directly in the process. Occupational therapists, who concentrate on upper extremity mobility and day-to-day functioning, will most likely be working in conjunction with physical therapists focusing on the functioning of the lower extremities and the more basic issues of mobility. Rehabilitation nurses are involved with issues of bladder and bowel functioning while speech and language therapists work with the victim regarding issues of verbal communication and swallowing.

The emotional trauma and anxiety suffered by the victim can be overpowering and psychologists can help patients enter into a state of mind better suited to the rigors of the recovery process. In some cases, there may also be the possibility of cognitive difficulties. Lastly, social workers and case workers will be playing a vital role in assisting the victim by providing an experienced interface between the patient and the rest of the team, family members, and payer sources.

The overall effectiveness of the multidisciplinary recovery team can have much to do with how well the various factions work together and communicate with each other. For those accident victims who have just suffered spinal cord injuries and paralysis, many complex and demanding recovery procedures and lifestyle accommodations lie ahead. If the accident that caused the life-altering injury was the result of another party's negligence or intent, acquiring the advice and support of those who have a firm grasp of Alabama personal injury laws can make a significant difference in obtaining a just and fair compensation that can help to better deal with the financial and lifestyle difficulties that will need to be faced.
