The Beaver Watershed Alliance (“BWA”) issued a September 29th news release announcing the completion of what it describes as a Low-Impact Development Pilot Project (“Project”) in Rogers, Arkansas.

The pilot Project is stated to have been made possible through partnerships with the following organizations:

  • United States Environmental Protection Agency
  • Arkansas Department of Agriculture –Natural Resources Division (“NRD”)
  • City of Rogers
  • Beaver Water District

The Project is stated to have included the installation of 40 permeable parking spaces. Interlocking concrete pavers were utilized.

Activities associated with the Project included:

  • Design and engineering services (City of Rogers)
  • Contractor for installation (Steep Creek, LLC)

The NRD is stated to have provided a grant titled “Lake Atalanta LID Demonstration Project in the Beaver Lake Watershed.” $407,982 was stated to have been allocated for Education and Outreach, Technical Assistance and Implementation.

The news release cites information from the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute which indicates that stormwater benefits achieved by using such paver systems include:

  • Up to 100% reduction of runoff from common stormwater events
  • 50-year life-cycle for this surface
  • Compatibility with underground stormwater storage, and can eliminate the need for storm drains
  • Increased site infiltration that helps maintain pre-development runoff volumes, peak flows and time of concentration
  • Heat island reduction
