Tax Law Blog: Social Media, the Internal Revenue Service and You

The IRS has joined the social media wave and is now accessible on many new forums. In addition, the Department's new app – IRS2Go - is available on most models of smartphone and is free to download.

This app allows users to get their refund status and tax updates, as well as other functions. Another resource that individuals may find helpful is the IRS YouTube videos that give instruction on a wide variety of tax subjects and are available in multiple languages. These sources of information are likely to be helpful to many individuals and provide visual instruction that can be easier to understand.

Not to be left behind, the IRS has also joined Facebook, Twitter (@IRSnews, @IRStaxpros and @IRSenEspanol), and Tumblr. On these sites, the Department posts useful tax tips from professionals, IRS news updates and job announcements.

The Department warns individuals that these tools are not to be used to share public information. Individuals should never post personal tax information, social security numbers, or personal questions on any social media sites.
