Estimated to come with a price tag of approximately $23 to $31 billion, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with the Texas General Land Office, have announced a plan to protect the Texas coast from hurricanes.

The selection comes after years of research by both agencies and several Texas universities. The plan includes beach restoration and the construction of levees and floodwalls along the coast, including a surge barrier gate between Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula.

The proposal is intended to protect the Houston area, as well as the nation’s largest petrochemical complex located at the Port of Houston, from highly destructive storm surges.

The agencies are accepting public comments for a period of 75 days.  All comments must be postmarked by January 9, 2019.
