United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) announced they will introduce the Part-Time Worker Bill of Rights. If passed, it would:
- Require employers with more than 500 workers to offer available hours to qualified part-time employees before hiring new employees;
- Allow part-time employees who have worked for at least a year to be eligible for Family and Medical Leave Act leave (eliminating the current requirement of 1,250 hours of work in the past year); and
- Allow part-time employees to participate in their employers’ pension plans if they have worked at least 500 hours for two consecutive years.
