This essay was awarded first prize in the legal services writing competition sponsored by the Access to Justice Project of the Brennan Center for Justice in 1999. In 2002, it was republished in CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW, Vol. 35, Nos. 11-12, p. 785 (March-April 2002)(a publication of the National Center on Poverty Law).

The article describes the tour of an eastern North Carolina jail that was dangerously overcrowded.
