Below is the Federal Policy team’s weekly preview, published when Congress is in session.

HEADLINES

• Congress returns this week from a two-week recess, with the House continuing to showcase Democrats’ legislative priorities and the Senate processing Trump administration nominees under new accelerated rules.

• President Donald Trump will meet with Democratic congressional leaders Tuesday to discuss infrastructure, prescription drug prices and other issues.

• A trade delegation led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will be in Beijing, as the United States and China continue work toward a trade agreement.

HOUSE

  • The House is in session today through Thursday. The agenda centers on the Climate Action Now Act.
  • The House Rules Committee will hold a hearing on the Medicare for All Act.
  • Appropriations work begins in earnest as the subcommittee that funds the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Departments marks up its bill.

SENATE

  • The Senate will consider several Trump nominees, after changing its rules to process the nominations more quickly.
  • Attorney General William Barr will appear before the Judiciary Committee for a hearing regarding the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign.
  • The Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing on nuclear energy.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Trump will host House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for a meeting Tuesday.
  • Trump will participate in National Day of Prayer events Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Trump will host Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini on Friday at the White House.
