The Wiley Team was all over Day One of Mobile World Congress 2022 and has a few key takeaways about 5G. Across panels and keynotes, industry leaders and innovators discussed and debated key aspects of 5G deployment—both spectrum needs and use cases.

  1. 5G is here! The speed floor has been raised. The next step is the emergence of use cases leveraging 5G’s new capabilities.
  2. While faster speeds are available, new uses cases like AR/VR, massive IoT and smart cities will also require advancements in edge computing and network slicing.
  3. Unlike prior generations of wireless technologies, the benefits of 5G may be most immediately experienced by business and government – 5G enabled factories, agriculture, healthcare and cities – not consumers.
  4. While spectrum sharing has its place, exclusive-use spectrum is still the gold standard. CBRS has been incrementally additive but lightly used for commercial wireless.
  5. The spectrum coffers are empty. The spectrum pipeline needs replenishing and there is an urgent need for renewed FCC auction authority and identification of frequency bands to fill the spectrum pipeline for the next 10 years.

So, while 6G comes up in conversation and innovators look over the horizon, the message remains there is still much to be done to support the deployment of 5G and the realization of its benefits across use cases and sectors.
