What Caused the Valley Mountain Regional Center Data Breach?

The Valley Mountain Regional Center data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, VRMC’s filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. VRMC also issued a press release discussing the incident.

According to these sources, on August 1, 2023, VRMC detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, VRMC secured its network and then launched an investigation with the help of external cybersecurity experts.

Ultimately, the VRMC investigation confirmed that, on July 29, 2023, an unauthorized party was able to access files stored on the company’s IT network that contained confidential patient information.
