What Is A TBI?

Auto accidents are capable of causing all kinds of injuries. One of the most serious outcomes of a motor vehicle collision is a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Depending on the circumstances of an accident, a person may sustain a non-penetrating brain injury where there is an impact to the skull, or a penetrating traumatic brain injury where a foreign object passes through the skull and makes contact with the brain. Sometimes the effects of a TBI do not manifest until several hours after an accident.

Symptoms of a TBI

The symptoms of a traumatic brain injury are not always obvious. If you experience any discomfort or pain after an accident, see a doctor and don’t be afraid to tell him or her exactly what is bothering you.

Listed below are some of the symptoms traumatic brain injury victims often report experiencing:

  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Persistent headache or headache that worsens
  • Constant nausea or vomiting
  • Dilation of one or both pupils of the eyes
  • The presence of clear liquid in the eyes or ears
  • Sudden seizures or convulsions
  • You are easily agitated or combative
  • Speech is slurred or distorted
  • Inability to awaken from sleep
  • Loss of consciousness from several minutes to hours
  • You experience a numbness in your fingers or toes
  • Any degree of motor skill impairment
  • Change in personality

If you are in an auto accident, seek medical help — do not try to diagnose your own injuries. Once you have obtained medical treatment, a consultation with an experienced attorney can provide the legal guidance you need to pursue fair compensation for your damages.
