The remarkable and self effacing Derek Jeter just became the 28th major league baseball player to have hit 3,000 base hits. What makes Jeter so remarkable is not merely his talent as a batter and fielder, but his emergence as a leader and a model team member. There is much we can learn about successful leadership from Derek Jeter. These lessons apply not only to completive professional sports, but to law firm leadership and, indeed, for success at the practice of law.
Lead by example. Respect the contributions of your team mates. Home runs are great, but it takes a lot of singles and doubles to win the game. Respect the legacy of your franchise and remember always that you are but a temporary steward. The best team leader is also the best team member.
