The United States Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) issued a September 17th report (“Report”) projecting that both natural gas and wind will be the fastest growing sources of electricity generation in the United States.

The Report forecasts natural gas-fired electricity generation in the United States will increase:

  • 6 percent (2019)
  • 2 percent (2020)

The Report forecasts electricity generation from wind power is forecast to increase by:

  • 6 percent (2019)
  • 14 percent (2020)

Forecast trends are noted to “vary widely among the regions of the country.” For example, natural gas generation is projected to be highest in the mid-Atlantic region. In contrast, growth in wind generation will be highest in Texas.

Such changes are stated to be driven by the changing mix of generating capacity.

Examples of coal replacement in certain regions are noted.
