DOT Invites Comments on Advanced Air Mobility: In this Notice and Request for Information, the Department of Transportation (DOT) seeks input on the development of a national strategy on Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) as required by the Advanced Air Mobility Coordination and Leadership Act. DOT requests information on the electromagnetic spectrum and telecommunications infrastructure needs of piloted and autonomous AAM applications in the near, medium, and long term, including what spectrum-using applications should be considered necessary components of an AAM ecosystem. DOT also asks what spectrum bands should be considered or tested to support such applications and what specific spectral characteristics are needed to support AAM applications. Comments are due July 17.

FCC Seeks Comment on the Wireless Emergency Alert System: In this Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (FNPRM), the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) seeks comment on proposed requirements for commercial mobile service providers that have elected to participate in the Wireless Emergency Alert system (WEA) to make WEA more accessible for the public. Specifically, the FNPRM seeks comment on the FCC’s proposal to increase flexibility in whether an attention signal or vibration is triggered when a WEA is triggered and on the proposed performance measures for improving transparency related to WEA devices. Comments are due July 21 and reply comments are due August 21.

  • FCC Artificial Intelligence Workshop: The FCC and National Science Foundation are co-hosting a half-day workshop on the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) for communications networks and consumers on July 13. More information, including the agenda, can be found here.
  • FCC Border Gateway Protocol Security Workshop: The FCC Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is hosting a workshop on July 31. Details and registration can be found here.

  • NIST Seeks Comment on Draft SP 800-171 Rev. 3, Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking comment on the initial public draft of SP 800-171 Rev. 3 on Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations. The Draft reflects extensive changes from Rev. 2, including: (1) alignment with SP 800-53; (2) the creation of a Prototype CUI Overlay that shows how the requirements align with SP 800-53 Rev. 5 and the tailoring decisions that NIST made in developing Rev. 3’s requirements; (3) the inclusion of organization-defined parameters in select security requirements; (4) the addition of a Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) control family; and (5) a new requirement to use “independent assessors or assessment teams to assess controls.” Comments are due July 14.
  • NIST Invites Comment on its Draft Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Hybrid Satellite Networks: NIST is seeking comment on its initial public draft of NISTIR 8441, the Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Hybrid Satellite Networks. The Profile demonstrates how the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) might apply to hybrid satellite networks. Comments are due July 14, pursuant to an extension.
  • White House Seeks Comment on National Priorities for AI: The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has released a Request for Information that is intended to assist with the Biden-Harris Administration’s development of a “National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy” to harness the benefits and mitigate the risks of AI. Comments are due July 7.
  • ISPAB Advisory Board Meeting: The Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board (ISPAB) is holding its monthly meeting on July 12 and 13. The agenda and registration details can be found here.
