Arizona Couple Tries to Ease Divorce Through Mediation

A recent ABC "Primetime" news special followed an Arizona couple in the process of getting a divorce. Chris and Shari Stewart had been married for 18 years and wanted to end their marriage without the hostility that many divorces spark. How did they attempt to keep the split civil and less expensive? They relied on divorce mediation as the central process in coming to a divorce settlement.

Mediation provides couples a forum wherein they can discuss their issues, goals and requirements of a divorce settlement together in hopes that the cost of attorneys and time of trial can be alleviated. In the Stewarts' case, Shari also depended on some help from a divorce attorney in order to ensure she was getting into a fair settlement.

While mediation might have saved them from some heartache and cost, the couple battled another difficult situation: living together in the midst of and after their divorce.
