Everyone is looking for changes to the Gulf of Mexico two years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The federal government operates the Natural Resource Damage Assessment Process, which conducted a preliminary assessment, created an injury assessment and plan and is now overseeing the restoration. This process helps determine BP’s full liability for the oil spill.

Although the Gulf of Mexico shows signs of healing, there is an indication of damage to deep-water coral reefs, mangroves, dolphins and some other fish species.

With more than 8,000 birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals found injured or dead in the months following the spill, the long-term effects of the oil and its dispersants remain unknown. Imbalanced food chains, decreased fish and wildlife populations and a decline in recreational activity might all throw the Gulf into unpredictable change. In addition, to protect the economies so vital to the future of the Gulf Coast, marshes, sea grasses, oyster beds, coastal forests and barrier islands require restoration.
