Without Disruptive Innovation, Many IP Law Firms Will Go the Way of Buggy Whip Manufacturers--Here's Why

There is a growing conversation about the need for alternative legal service billing methods, however, many IP law firms will likely either try to ignore the desire for change or will respond by offering only incremental modifications to their existing methods of providing legal services to their clients. Thus, many prestigious and historically highly profitable IP law firms will in the foreseeable future cease to exist. The possible future obsolescence of IP law firms is possibly foretold by the story of the buggy whip manufacturers of more than 100 years ago. This article highlights existing failures of IP law firm client service models, and demonstrates the parallels between these law firms and the buggy whip manufacturers of old. The article concludes that today's IP law firms are destined for obsolescence unless they recognize the need for dramatic change and embrace disruptive innovation to effect that change.
