Patrick Van Eecke and Antoon Dierick (both DLA Piper Brussels) comment on a match fixing trial which started today before the Brussels’ courts.
Today, the lawsuit started against 31 individuals, amongst whom the notorious Ye Zheyun (called the “gokchinees” in Belgium), and 1 company who are suspected of having fixed several football matches in the Belgian football competition during the seasons 2004-2005 and 2005-2006.
Among the accused, next to Ye (who has disappeared since), are several football players and trainers who were active in Belgium’s top division. Today’s session before court was an introductory session. It is expected that the trial itself will start and end in February 2014.
