Testimony in the Inquest into the death of Derek Williams in Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) custody concluded on Tuesday, February 20, 2013. According to a court document filed by Special Prosecutor John Franke, the Inquest jury will be asked to consider charges of Failure to Render Aid to a Person in Custody against three MPD officers involved in the incident which led to Mr. Williams’ death. The jury will also be asked to determine a cause of death. The Special Prosecutor ruled out homicide charges against any of the MPD officers, due to conflicting medical testimony as to the cause and manner of Derek Williams’ death. On Wednesday, February 20, 2013, the jury will hear a closing statement from Mr. Franke, receive instructions from presiding Judge Kevin Martens, and then begin the deliberations. The jury will then render an advisory verdict as to whether the three MPD officers should be charged for failing to render aid to Mr. Williams.
