With effect from May 2011, the Australian parliament has replaced the myriad of predominantly state-based laws and regulations governing the taking of security over personal property. They have been replaced by a uniform national legal code, complimented by a shattel security registration system, accessible on-line and in real time. Australia thus joins New Zealand and many North American jusridictions in adopting a sophisticated and streamlined statute in an increasing important area of consumer and business finance.
