Because of the significant increase in disability insurance claims, insurance carriers are now scrutinizing the terms of their policies and any claims made thereunder, utilizing novel and creative theories when denying benefits. At the same time, these carriers are attempting to increase their revenues by significantly raising premiums on new policies, which provide far fewer benefits than policies issued less than a decade ago. Because physicians are no longer a targeted group for disability insurance, insureds should familiarize themselves with their policies and the claims process, and continue paying premiums on any liberalized policies that they may have purchased in the past.
