Most people think of estate planning as planning for death, for instance, drafting a will. However, estate planning is a comprehensive process that plans for life, disability, death and beyond. It’s a complete plan, which at a bare minimum, includes either a will or a trust, an advanced medical directive (combination of a living will and a healthcare power of attorney and provides instructions to the medical community on your care), a HIPAA authorization form (allows your power of attorney and/or agent to have access to your medical records), durable financial power of attorney (allows your agent to be able to handle your financial affairs if you are unable), and memorial instructions (how you want your funeral to be conducted), among others.
