This article, which I co-authored with Dianne Bourque and Karen Lovitch, appeared in the April 2010 G2 Compliance Report. The artice describes the HITECH Act's expansion of HIPAA privacy and security requirements to new entities and organizations instrumental in EHR adoption, the application of certain HIPAA standards to busienss associates, the establishment of notification requirements for security breaches involving unsecured PHI, and increased penalties for HIPAA violations.
