New York auto accident lawyer David Perecman comments on the Greyhound bus that overturned on the Pennsylvania Turnpike while on its way to St. Louis. This bus crash sent 14 people to the hospital.
Vexing to some New York auto accident lawyers, this recent bus accident was one of a growing number of bus accidents on roads in the Northeast.
In 2011, there have already been more bus crash related injuries and deaths than in all last year. Over 30 people have been killed and more than 300 injured in tour bus accidents this year, according to Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. In 2010, 30 people were killed and 272 injured in 28 bus crashes.
“The recent increase in bus accidents is alarming,” said New York auto accident lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, one of New York’s auto accident law firms, “The increase is even more alarming given that more is being done more to reduce the number of bus accidents then has done in the past.”
In this recent bus accident, the driver, Kareem Edward Farmer, 24, lost control of the bus. According to state police, the front end of the bus struck a concrete barrier and the left rear side rode up against the barrier. The bus then careened across the highway and traveled up an embankment before toppling over on its side.
Unlike most of the other 2011 bus crashes along the East Coast, this bus accident involved a commercial carrier, not a chartered tour bus or a smaller operator.
In March 2011, New York began increased enforcement of bus regulations. This greater scrutiny of buses followed several fatal bus accidents including the crash of a bus returning to New York after an overnight trip to a Connecticut casino. Fifteen people were killed in the bus accident.
New York auto accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm supported tightening of and increase in safety regulations.
State police and the federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are still investigating the bus accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Farmer was reported to have a clean record.
Most people who have been involved in a bus accident have legal options available to them. These options include bringing a claim against the bus company and others for injuries and other losses they have suffered. Some of the types of compensation that may be available in a bus injury claim include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.
