Bonnie Merrick – 1st Class Bail Bonds, Inc.

Practice/Organization Description

In March of 1984, I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I applied for a babysitting job at a bail bonds office in Norwalk. It was only after I completed the job application I was told the babysitting job had been filled. Instead, I was told there was a position available working in the office at the bail bonds company. I considered the offer. On the one hand, it seemed crazy and risky because in order to work there I would have to quit college. On the other hand, it was exciting and seemed like a very unique opportunity. I accepted the offer, quit college and moved into a waterfront home in Huntington Harbor. In addition to my clerical duties at the bail bonds office, I was also hired to be the bail bondsman's limousine driver. He had a white limousine with gold-plated trim. My compensation was room and board in a waterfront home in Huntington Harbor plus $50 a week for what probably ended up being a 50-60 hour work week. It worked for me because I was young and loved that every day at work was different. Working there was entertaining, interesting and exciting. The stories I could tell :-)
