Practice/Organization Description

Cooper-Gordon LLP divides its practice between family law and estate plan preparation, probate and trusts administration. We also handle conservatorships and guardianships. The partners are Avery M. Cooper, Esq. and Frieda Gordon, Esq. and our 3 assosciates are Katherine Su, Esq., Drorit Bick Raiter, Esq. and Erin Louria Zivid, Esq. We also staff a paralegal, legal assistant, office administrator and bookkeeper. Formerly, Frieda was a concert pianist, trained at Juilliard and Oberlin College (where she double majored in music performance and international politics) and had a very successful career as a soloist, orchestral performer, accompanist, chamber music performer, vocal coach, piano instructor and school teacher until circumstances caused her to change careers and become an attorney. The firm focuses on a holistic approach to litigation and case management and encourages clients to plan ahead as much as possible to avoid unnecessary costs of litigation. The partners anre trained and have successful mediation and collaborative law practices, both for family law as well as probate. Both partners have presented with their colleagues at several one and two-day seminars for certified family law specialists from all over the State of California. They have spoken on the topic of "Valuing Minority Business Interests for Purposes of Divorce" and on the issue of "Joint Legal Custody-When is it Not a Good Idea" at Annual Spring Seminars for the ACFLS (of which organization she served as President in 2003). Frieda has spoken at the Annual International Conference of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts in New Orleans, LA on the subject of grandparents' visitation rights and also spoke in Seattle, Washington at an AFCC Conference in the Spring of 2005 to therapists, evaluators, mediators, lawyers and judges on the subject of International Abductions to Non-Hague Countries - Risks and Remedies. In January of 2006, she spoke on the same topic to another national audience of lawyers at the National Continuing Legal Education Seminar in Aspen, CO. In April, 2006, she spoke before the statewide Association of Certified Family Law Specialists on the cutting edge topic of Assisted Reproductive Technologies Families' Rights and Remedies.
