Rhys Clift – Hill Dickinson LLP

Practice/Organization Description

English solicitor, admitted in 1983. My primary focus is on marine insurance & reinsurance, energy and maritime casualties. For much of the last three years in particular I have also been substantially engaged in Somalia piracy work. The incidence of loss off Somalia has declined sharply; pirate activity has surged off West Africa.

International Who’s Who of Shipping and Maritime Lawyers 2010 says Rhys Clift “possesses a remarkable depth of expertise”.

In the last five years I have, working closely with underwriters and claims personnel, written and edited two main package policies (marine insurance); one for superyachts, another for blue water tonnage, including Marine, War, IV and LOH cover, with related extensions and endorsements.

Certain recent papers, for example on the reform of English insurance contract law (a Sisyphean task?) and on new theories for the cause of the sinking of TITANIC (my firm acted for the owners), are published by my firm, Hill Dickinson LLP, and below on J D Supra, and widely in hard copy and on line; some in English, French, Spanish and Italian.

Spoken (amongst other things) on insurance/reinsurance, and dispute resolution widely in UK and abroad (eg. Cyprus, Dubai, France, Germany, India, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, USA and Venezuela); sample feedback: “absolutely first class.”

In anticipation of the huge growth in LNG transport, in 2005 I commissioned a comparison between the Shelltime forms, including ShellLNGtime. The core of the book was written here at Hill Dickinson LLP and published by Intertanko in 2010.

Accredited as a commercial mediator in 1998; designed project for the Insurance Institute of London (IIL) to create a manual on mediation/ADR, published in January 2011, with a generous and supportive review by Lord Woolf.

In November 2010 published "Mediation in England and Wales", a short practical text for those involved in disputes. It contains a generous review by Professor Greiman of Harvard University, a specialist in dispute resolution. Sir Henry Brooke, then Chairman CMC says in his review: “Rhys Clift has… a formidable reputation in the mediation marketplace” describing the book as “ a must read. . this excellent short book …”. Various translations have been published thus far: French, Italian and Japanese.

In 2012 I was part of the Judging Panel for the CEDR Awards for Excellence in ADR.
