Seva Batkin – Clark Wilson LLP

Practice/Organization Description

How and why did I become a litigator?

Started out as a self-taught computer technician when I was 15. As a high school student, found a co-op placement at Nortel and taught myself computer networking and telecommunications skills. By the end of the school year, was offered a technical position at a rapid prototyping lab. Stayed at Nortel for the next 6 years, until 2003, as a lab tech, then a lab-manager, and finally a sales engineer and subject-matter expert for data and optical products. In essence, I was a bridge between clients (who wanted the moon), sales people (who would sell the moon), and engineers (who suspected that clients were mythical beings). In parallel, I competed a communications engineering degree with high distinction at Carleton University.

Eventually left Ottawa and Nortel for the West Coast, trading skates for skis. After seven years in R&D, a year in IT as a senior network engineer for a major investment firm was not nearly as exciting, and convinced me that life holds more in store.

Concluding that blood makes me queasy, that one is never too old for an MBA, and that I haven't yet had enough of ski slopes, I started an LL.B. program at UBC. Over the next four years, I ran a successful legal research business, finished at the top of the class, and spent a year clerking for the BC Supreme Court. Finally facing the real world again, I joined Clark Wilson LLP as an associate in the firm's Business Litigation, IP and Technology departments.

Why Clark Wilson? Simple. The firm's entrepreneurial culture, best expressed in its motto "BC's law firm for business", its recognition of each lawyer's (associate or partner) unique skills and experiences, and its focus on mentorship and client service, reflects my own values and experiences, and enables me to deliver first rate service to my clients. So, without further ado, I am here to help!
