AGs Call Foul on NFL Gender Discrimination; Congress Flags Financial Irregularities by Washington Commanders

  • A coalition of six state AGs, led by New York State AG Letitia James, issued a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressing concern over the gender-based discrimination and hostile work environment allegations recently reported by the New York Times.
  • The letter cited the NFL’s alleged refusal to take the issue of domestic violence seriously and female NFL employees being denied advancement, as well as descriptions of unwanted touching, parties at which prostitutes were hired, and retaliation for complaints of discrimination, and the signatory AGs warned they would use the full weight of their authority to investigate and prosecute allegations of harassment, discrimination or retaliation.
  • In another regulatory development for the NFL, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform sent a letter to the FTC detailing claims of extensive financial irregularities within the Washington Commanders organization, including the involvement of team owner Dan Snyder, following an investigation into the team’s operations.
  • According to the Committee, they obtained evidence of concerning business practices, such providing false ticket revenue information to the NFL, as well as a pattern of withholding millions of dollars in refundable security deposits from thousands of customers for seat leases and deliberately making refunds of those deposits difficult. The letter urges the FTC to investigate these alleged unfair and deceptive practices to determine whether enforcement action is warranted.
