Amazon’s First Drone Delivery

Amazon’s Prime Air took off on its first fully autonomous package delivery flight. While there have been many hurdles for Amazon’s drone package delivery initiative in the United States, that has not stopped them in other countries around the world. Amazon’s website included a post about its first flight, writing, “We’re excited about Prime Air–a delivery system designed to safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles, also called drones. Prime Air has great potential to enhance the services we already provide to millions of customers by providing rapid parcel delivery that will also increase the overall safety and efficiency of the transportation system.” This initiative is just a testing period, so those who choose to participate (i.e. the consumer who will receive the delivery from Prime Air) choose from a series of items (thousands), from electronics to dog treats, and then once the trial participant makes the purchase, the drone goes down an automated track and flies autonomously (below 400 feet) with a package weighing up to five pounds, navigating itself with a GPS. The package was delivered to a customer in the Cambridge area of England on December 7, 2016,  and made it to the participant’s house just 13 minutes after the order was placed.
