On March 24, 2023, American Pain and Wellness, PLLC (“APW”) filed a notice of data breach with the Maine Attorney General after learning that an unauthorized party was able to access confidential patient data stored on the company’s computer network. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, Social Security Numbers, insurance information and protected health information. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, APW began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the American Pain and Wellness Breach

News of the American Pain and Wellness is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Maine Attorney General. According to this source, on November 27, 2022, APW detected suspicious activity within its computer system. In response, the company launched an investigation in hopes of learning more about the incident and what, if any, patient data was leaked as a result.

The APW investigation confirmed that the company’s network was accessed by an unidentified and unauthorized actor between November 10, 2022 and November 27, 2022. American Pain and Wellness later determined that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential patient information.

Upon discovering that sensitive patient data was made available to an unauthorized party, American Pain and Wellness began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security Number, insurance information and protected health information.

On March 24, 2023, American Pain and Wellness sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
