On October 6, 2022, Amerigroup Insurance Company reported a data breach with the Texas Attorney General’s Office. According to Amerigroup, the breach resulted in the names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and health insurance information belonging to certain individuals being compromised. However, because Amerigroup has yet to post notice of the incident on its website or otherwise elaborate on the breach, the cause of the data breach remains unknown. Recently, Amerigroup sent out data breach letters to all affected parties, informing them of the incident and what they can do to protect themselves from identity theft and other frauds.

The Amerigroup data breach is just the most recent in a surge of data security incidents that have compromised millions of Americans’ personal information. In fact, in 2021, the total number of data breaches reached an all-time high, claiming 68 percent from the previous year. As we noted in a previous piece, hackers are relying on more sophisticated methods of orchestrating these attacks, allowing them to specifically target the most valuable information that they can either use to commit identity theft or sell to other criminals on the dark web. The result is that data breach victims must remain vigilant in monitoring their credit reports and financial accounts after receiving a data breach letter such as the one recently sent out by Amerigroup Insurance Company.
