Brightly Software, Inc. Announces Data Breach Affecting 2,964,292 SchoolDude Platform Users

On May 11, 2023, Brightly Software, Inc. filed a notice of data breach with the Office of the Maine Attorney General after learning that an unauthorized party gained access to confidential account holder information stored in the company’s SchoolDude user database. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, email addresses, account passwords, phone numbers and school district names. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, Brightly began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the Brightly Software Breach

News of the Brightly Software data breach is still relatively new; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine. According to this source, Brightly recently learned of a suspected data security incident. In response, Brightly launched an investigation into the incident with the assistance of third-party data security specialists. Brightly also notified law enforcement.

The Brightly investigation confirmed that an unauthorized user was able to access the SchoolDude user database and remove confidential account holder information. Brightly did not elaborate on how the unauthorized actor was able to secure access to the database. However, upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Brightly Software began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, email address, account password, phone number and school district name.

On May 11, 2023, Brightly Software sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident. Brightly is requiring all users to reset their SchoolDude password following the breach. Additionally, the company indicated in its data breach letter that all users should immediately reset their passwords to other accounts if they are using the same password as for the SchoolDude platform.
