Announcement
In welcome news to international travelers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on June 10, 2022, that effective June 12, 2022, all individuals traveling to the United States will no longer need to show negative COVID-19 test results before boarding their flights. The order applies to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and non-citizens traveling to the U.S. from a foreign country. Individuals traveling to the U.S. by land or sea were already exempted from the testing requirement.

Background
Previously, all inbound international travelers (age two and older) to the U.S. were required to present a negative COVID-19 result from a sample taken no more than one day before departure. The CDC based the decision to rescind the air-travel COVID-19 testing requirement on changed circumstances in the U.S., including widespread COVID-19 vaccination and infection-induced immunity, availability of effective therapeutics, as well as reduced hospitalizations and deaths caused by COVID-19. The CDC notes that, as of June 9, 2022, 70.9% of the U.S. population (five years and older) has been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The CDC continues to recommend testing for COVID-19 before and after traveling by air as a safety precaution. The CDC will reassess this decision if a concerning COVID-19 variant emerges.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement Still Applies
All U.S. inbound travelers, except for U.S citizens, permanent residents, and individuals with immigrant visas, under the age of 18, are still required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination before traveling to the U.S. As a reminder, individuals are considered to be fully vaccinated for air travel to the U.S. 14 days after their first dose of an accepted single-dose vaccine or 14 days after their second dose of an accepted 2-dose vaccine series.
