Colombia

Status – Has any special status been introduced?

The Colombian government took measures to minimize the spread of COVID-19 since the very beginning of the pandemic.

The most important measure was the set-up of a mandatory lockdown on March 25th, 2020. Initially, it was decreed for 19 days, however, it was progressively extended in phases, each time indicating new exceptions. On April 17, the government released the decalogue of what would be the "Compulsory Collaborative and Intelligent Preventive Isolation", in a new stage of lockdown.

Although these general measures are set across the country by the National Government, Departments and Municipalities have the authority to regulate and determine their scopes and exceptions.

The ease or strength of restrictions is nowadays determined by the local authorities upon the increase or decrease of COVID-19 cases in their jurisdictions.

Biosecurity measures:

  • Hand washing
  • Social distancing
  • Personal protection equipment
  • Adequate ventilation
  • Cleaning and disinfection of work areas and elements.
Which retail units are Open

As mentioned, most Departments and Municipalities allow almost all businesses and industries to operate normally subject to the situation of the virus in their jurisdictions, including retail stores.

The operation of businesses, industries, and stores is allowed by adopting certain social distancing measures and constantly cleaning and sanitizing procedures.

Which retail units are Closed

Although through last year the commerce, in general, suffer many closures, nowadays as a general rule, all retail businesses are open with capacity restrictions and biosecurity measures.

The Colombian government, from May 4, 2020, began an opening plan for some sectors of the industry, such as manufacturing and construction, to reduce the economic crisis that occurred during the pandemic. However, retail businesses having a high risk of social concentration and spread of COVID-19 may be subject to stricter social distancing measures and cleaning and sanitizing procedures. Notwithstanding the above, the current situation could change depending on the increase of COVID-19 cases in the country.
