We are filing a lawsuit against Attorney General Sessions in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on behalf of the City of Philadelphia. It asserts the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) new grant conditions imposed in July related to what the DOJ calls sanctuary city policies, “are unconstitutional, arbitrary and capricious.” Over the past decade (11 years to be exact), the City has received an average annual award of US$2.2 million. Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the state of California have each separately filed similar lawsuits, as applications for the DOJ grants in question are due 5 September.
On Wednesday, 30 August, The City of Philadelphia filed a complaint to seek an injunction and declaratory relief from the DOJ grant funding conditions related to immigration and Philadelphia’s “sanctuary policies.”
