Scope of the Pause
The pause applies to immigrant visa applicants who are nationals of a comprehensive list of countries identified by the administration as high risk for public benefits usage. Affected individuals may continue to submit applications and attend scheduled interviews; however, no immigrant visas will be issued to these applicants during the pause period. The Department of State will maintain interview scheduling for impacted applicants, but final visa issuance remains suspended.
Exceptions
Certain exceptions apply under the new guidance. Dual nationals who apply with a valid passport from a country not included on the high-risk list are exempt and may continue with the immigrant visa process. Additionally, the policy does not affect previously issued valid immigrant visas, which remain in effect. The Department of State has clarified that no immigrant visas have been revoked as a result of this action.
Nonimmigrant Visa Processing
The current pause does not affect nonimmigrant visa applicants, such as those seeking tourist visas. Processing for nonimmigrant visas will continue under existing procedures.
