The Impact of The EU General Data Protection Regulation -
The EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 4 May 2016 following the compromise agreed among the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.
It is intended to replace the EU Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC (Data Protection Directive), which was adopted in 1995 when the internet was in its infancy. Given the rapid and significant development of digital technologies and their effects on personal data, the Data Protection Directive needed updating and modernising. In addition, its transposition in the national legislation of all EU Member States has sometimes created obstacles to effective and consistent implementation across the European Union.
