The IRS announced on April 17, 2018 that, due to IRS computer problems, all taxpayers are being given an extra day to file their 2017 tax returns and to pay any taxes owed (see IR-2018-100, April 17, 2018).  The IRS apparently discovered this computer problem sometime Tuesday morning, April 17th, which was the regular deadline date this year for filing and paying.

With this announcement, both individuals and businesses with a filing or payment due date of April 17th will now have until midnight on Wednesday, April 18th to file their 2017 federal tax returns and to pay any taxes due. Taxpayers do not need to file an extension, or do anything to receive this extra day – it is now automatic!

An additional 6-month extension to file a 2017 tax return can also be filed now by this extended April 18th due date, but estimated taxes may be due with the filing of this extension.
