The 2021 real property valuations for Jefferson County, Alabama were recently published. If you believe your property was overvalued, and want to protest the valuation, you must file an objection with the Jefferson County Board of Equalization (BOE) no later than July 28, 2021. Written notice of the 2021 valuations are sent only to those property owners whose property values increased over last year. If the BOE values a property at the same or less value as last year, no notice is sent. If you have not received a written notice, we suggest checking your 2021 valuation online to make sure the value did not increase as notices that should be sent, sometimes are not sent, and the county’s failure to send the notice does not extend the deadline to object. Visit the Jefferson County Citizen Access portal to view this year’s valuation and other property tax related information specific to your property. Be sure the tax year is set to 2021, and then you can search your property by owner name, parcel number, or address.

The BOE website has information about this year’s valuation notices and the options for submitting objections.

For many, if not most, residential properties, the potential tax savings from a successful objection may not be that significant. However, for high valuation properties, the tax savings from a successful protest can be very significant. In recent years, our business clients have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes from successful protests.
