On July 13, 2020, Governor Cuomo appointed four Supreme Court Justices to fill vacancies on the Appellate Division, First Department.  The Governor elevated Justices Saliann Scarpulla, Manuel Jacobo Mendez Olivero, Martin Shulman and Tanya R. Kennedy, who represent the diversity of New York’s judicial system.

Justice Scarpulla has been serving as a New York County Commercial Division Justice since 2014, and recently was appointed as the dedicated Justice hearing international commercial arbitration matters in New York County Supreme Court.

Upon graduation from law school, she served as principal court attorney to then Supreme Court Justice Alvin F. Klein.  Thereafter, Justice Scarpulla worked as a commercial litigation associate at Proskauer Rose LLP, senior counsel in the New York Legal Services Office of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and in-house counsel for Hudson United Bank.  Following the private positions, Justice Scarpulla returned to the New York State courts, serving as principal court attorney to Hon. Eileen Bransten, who was then a Justice in the Commercial Division.

Justice Scarpulla was elected to the N.Y.C. Civil Court in 2001 and to the N.Y.S. Supreme Court in 2012.

Justice Scarpulla is a member of the Commercial Division Advisory Council.  She is Co-President of Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert.  She is a recipient of the Hon. Louis J. Capozzoli Gavel Award from the New York County Lawyers Association.
