Governor Kathy Hochul has called an extraordinary session of the Legislature in Albany to begin on Thursday, June 30. The session is being held in an effort to discuss the impacts of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc., et al. v. Bruen, Superintendent of New York State Police, et al. decision overturning New York State law that previously placed “proper cause” restrictions on the issuance of permits for concealed carry firearms in the state.

Early reports indicate that the governor’s team is crafting new gun safety legislation that might include provisions to require firearms training and may place restrictions on concealed carry in certain “sensitive places,” which could include locations such as hospitals and schools.

The provisions of legislation under consideration for the extraordinary session are not yet available, but we will continue to monitor developments in Albany and will keep Manatt clients apprised as additional information becomes available.
