This is an active lawsuit, and none of the allegations against the defendant(s) have been proven. The contents of this page reflect the allegations in the lawsuits.

The rideshare company Lyft is facing multiple lawsuits from passengers who allege that they were sexually assaulted by the company’s drivers. As Lyft sexual assault cases continue to make headlines, we expect that more rideshare sexual assault survivors will come forward.

Victims who were sexually assaulted by their Lyft drivers have clear legal rights. While Lyft rideshare sexual assault cases remain ongoing, and while Lyft is currently disputing plaintiffs’ claims for damages, any victims who have grounds to take legal action can—and should—seek to hold the company accountable. Victims can discuss their legal options with an experienced lawyer for free, and those who have grounds to seek compensation can hire a lawyer to represent them at no out-of-pocket cost.

“While Uber sexual assault lawsuits have gotten more attention in the media, Lyft is facing a growing number of rideshare sexual assault lawsuits as well. Whether victims have claims against Uber or Lyft, they can—and should—engage a law firm to file a civil lawsuit and seek compensation on their behalf.” – Dr. Nick Oberheiden, Founding Attorney of Oberheiden Law Group

While Lyft drivers who perpetrate sexual assaults may face criminal charges in some cases, victims must file civil lawsuits in order to pursue monetary compensation for the financial and non-financial consequences of their victimization. By fighting to hold Lyft accountable, victims may be able to help prevent future harm and future assaults as well.

7 Important Facts About Lyft Sexual Assault Lawsuits

Here is an overview of what sexual assault victims need to know about pending sexual assault and sexual abuse claims against Lyft and what they can expect from the legal process:

1. Lyft Has Acknowledged Receiving Reports of Thousands of Sexual Assault Incidents

While Lyft is disputing liability in ongoing sexual assault lawsuits against the company, it has acknowledged receiving reports of thousands of sexual assault incidents involving its drivers. It most recently did so in mid-2024, when it published a Safety Report with data from 2020 through 2022.

Lyft’s 2024 Safety Report acknowledges that riders have reported numerous forms of sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment, physical assaults, rapes, and other forms of sexual violence. But, again, despite thousands of passengers reporting experiencing rideshare sexual assault, Lyft is continuing to deny liability—primarily by arguing that it has conducted appropriate background checks and taken other appropriate steps to help protect its customers.

2. Victims Who Experienced Sexual Assault Perpetrated By Lyft Drivers Can—and Should—Take Legal Action

While Lyft is continuing to dispute plaintiffs’ claims, the sexual assault lawsuits filed against the company to date put forward several theories of liability. Importantly, while Lyft has argued that it should not face vicarious liability for its drivers’ behavior because its drivers are independent contractors, lawsuits allege that the company deserves to be held directly liable on various grounds as well.

As a result, victims who have experienced sexual harassment and other forms of sexual assault during Lyft rides can—and should—take legal action. If Lyft failed to conduct adequate criminal background checks, if it was negligent in hiring sexual predators, if it ignored passenger complaints, or if it failed to take any other necessary safety precautions, these could all provide grounds for victims to pursue compensation in court.

3. Lyft is Facing Sexual Assault Claims in State and Federal Courts

At present, Lyft is facing sexual assault claims in state and federal courts. These claims rely on police reports, medical records documenting victims’ physical injuries, and various other forms of evidence to argue that Lyft deserves to be held accountable. For victims, hiring an experienced sexual assault attorney to collect and preserve evidence before it disappears is a key first step toward building a claim for maximum compensation.

4. Similar Claims Involving Uber Drivers Are Being Consolidated in the National Uber Sexual Assault MDL

As mentioned above, Lyft is not the only rideshare company facing widespread sexual assault allegations. Thousands of Uber passengers have filed lawsuits as well. Currently, claims involving Uber drivers are being consolidated in national multidistrict litigation (MDL) and in state court in California. These types of consolidated proceedings offer a more streamlined way for victims to seek justice; and, similar to individual lawsuits, engaging legal representation in an MDL proceeding costs victims nothing out-of-pocket.

There is not yet an MDL proceeding involving rideshare sexual assault claims against Lyft—and there is no guarantee that one will be formed. However, given the current status of the Uber litigation, this appears to be a realistic possibility. The more plaintiffs who come forward with allegations that a Lyft driver sexually assaulted them, the more likely it is that we will see a Lyft sexual assault MDL.

5. Lawsuits Allege that Lyft Has Failed to Implement Necessary Safety Measures

The sexual assault lawsuits filed against Lyft to date largely focus on allegations that the company failed to implement necessary safety measures to protect its customers. Plaintiffs’ lawyers are continuing to gather evidence—with some lawsuits currently in the discovery phase. In discovery, plaintiffs’ lawyers have the ability to obtain internal corporate records and other evidence that they cannot obtain outside of the litigation process; and, as a result, discovery is a turning point in many cases.

Again, however, it is important to emphasize that the allegations against Lyft have not yet been proven—and there is no guarantee that they will. But, as more plaintiffs continue to come forward, the case for liability is seemingly becoming clearer (although Lyft would almost certainly argue that this isn’t the case).

6. Lyft Sexual Assault Lawsuits Are Largely Still in the Early Stages

It is also important to emphasize that the current Lyft sexual assault lawsuits are still largely in the early stages. As a result, rideshare assault survivors who file claims will need to be patient. But, with that said, coming forward is important; and, if Lyft is ultimately held accountable (or agrees to a settlement), engaging a legal team to take action will be well worth it in the end.

7. Victims Who Have Claims Can Hire a Lyft Sexual Assault Lawyer at No Out-of-Pocket Cost

For victims who have claims against Lyft, the first step in the process is to schedule a free and confidential consultation with an experienced sexual assault lawyer. As mentioned above, hiring a lawyer to file a lawsuit costs victims nothing out-of-pocket in this scenario. Lawyers are handling Lyft sexual assault lawsuits on a contingency-fee basis, which means that their legal fees (if any) will be deducted from their clients’ financial recoveries if their claims are successful.

Potential Settlement Information: Plaintiffs Are Seeking Financial Compensation for Their Financial and Non-Financial Losses

While there is still a long way to go in the Lyft sexual assault litigation (and, again, there are no guarantees), it is important for victims who have Lyft sexual assault and sexual abuse claims to make informed decisions about taking legal action. Among other things, this includes understanding how much they may be able to recover if the litigation proves successful.

Every victim’s circumstances are unique, and experiencing rideshare sexual assault impacts different victims in different ways. As a result, if you have a sexual assault claim against Lyft, the amount you are entitled to recover is unique—and personal—to you.

Generally, however, victims who have grounds to file rideshare sexual assault lawsuits are entitled to recover the same types of damages. These damages include compensation for financial and non-financial losses such as:

  • Medical Bills – This includes all past, present and future medical bills for diagnosing and treating the physical and psychological effects of your sexual assault. These costs can be substantial; and, for many victims, these costs can continue to add up for the rest of their lives.
  • Lost Wages – This includes lost wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation if you are unable to work due to your ordeal. Many sexual assault survivors find that their emotional trauma makes it impossible to resume life as they knew it before their victimization.
  • Pain and Suffering – This is additional compensation (above and beyond your medical bills) for the non-financial impacts of your physical pain and suffering.
  • Emotional Trauma – This is additional compensation (above and beyond your medical bills) for the emotional trauma you endure as a result of your victimization.
  • Other Forms of Financial and Non-Financial Loss – From prescription medications to loss of companionship, consortium, and enjoyment of life, victims of rideshare sexual assaults are generally entitled to recover various other financial and non-financial losses as well.

If you have a claim against Lyft, an experienced attorney will be able to help you understand the specific losses you are entitled to recover. Again, it should not cost you anything to learn about your legal rights; and, if you decide you want to join the litigation against lift, you should not have to pay anything out-of-pocket for your legal representation.
