On August 10, 2018, Governor Baker signed the non-compete bill recently passed by the Massachusetts Legislature. (A full summary of the bill can be found here.) As a result, the new law will take effect on October 1, 2018 and will apply to agreements signed on and after that date. In preparation, Massachusetts employers should review their practices in requiring that employees and independent contractors sign post-employment non-compete restrictions, and they should ensure that their form agreements comply with the new law.
