Leer en Español: México Participará en la 107 Conferencia Internacional del Trabajo en Ginebra

Mexico is an attendee at the 107th International Labor Conference, led by the International Labor Organization (ILO) from May 28 to June 8, 2018, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The main objective of this year's session is the construction of better working conditions and quality of life for workers throughout the world.

Mexico will be present at the session without having ratified the following two conventions:

  1. Convention 98 (C098), which establishes that workers must enjoy adequate protections against acts of discrimination aimed at undermining freedom of association with unions in relation to their employment. This protection shall be exercised especially against any act that has the purpose to: a) compel the worker to the condition that he/she does not join a union or to cease being a member of a union; b) dismiss or injure a worker in any other way because of their union membership or participation in union activities outside of work hours or, without the consent of the employer, during work hours.
  2. Convention 189 (C189), concerning decent working conditions for domestic workers and offering specific protection to domestic workers. It establishes basic rights and principles, and requires ratifying states to take a series of measures in order to make decent work a reality for people who have domestic jobs.

It is important to note that there have been 187 ILO conventions, and Mexico has ratified only 67. For instance, Mexico receives an annual report in which the ratified conventions are reviewed, then receives recommendations when there is a breach of an agreement.

Once the International Labor Conference is over, Holland & Knight will provide an in-depth analysis of the progress and agreements reached.
