The tragedy at the Capital Gazette in July and recent bombing attempts have underscored that we have entered a frightening new era in journalism. The tragedy at the Capital Gazette in July and recent bombing attempts have underscored that we have entered a frightening new era in journalism. Whether in their own newsroom or out covering news where allies of the president are encouraged to turn on reporters as the “enemy of the people,” the physical safety of members of the media is under attack as never before, and serving as reporters’ advocates has taken on new meaning.

This webinar focused on newsroom safety and security best practices. Our panel discusses developing safety protocols, assessing online threats, and reevaluating concerns posed by pro se libel plaintiffs and other media gadflies in the wake of recent events.

The webinar is hosted by the Media Law Resource Center (MLRC) Criminal Law Committee co-chairs Jacquelyn Schell of Ballard Spahr and Kaitlin Gurney of Pepper Hamilton and features the following panelists:

- Lucy A. Dalglish, Dean and Professor at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism of the University of Maryland (currently housing the Capital Gazette)

- David M. Giles, VP, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Ethics Officer at the E.W. Scripps Company

- Dennis K. Burke, Of Counsel at Ballard Spahr LLP, Founder and General Counsel at Global Security and Innovative Strategies (GSIS), and former U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona See less -
