Tuesday, March 3rd was primary election day in North Carolina. Voters selected their picks for local, state, and federal offices before the November general election. Many incumbents will be returning to the General Assembly, however there are many notable shakeups for the Democrats and Republicans. With lots of eyes on the Senate District 26 Republican primary, Senate Pro Tempore Phil Berger is trailing Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page by 23 votes following Friday’s updated count of provisional ballots, and next will be a possible recount. Federally, it was decided that former RNC chairman Michael Whatley will face former governor Roy Cooper for current US Senator Thom Tillis’ seat in the general election.

On the Republican side of the aisle, four incumbents will not be returning to the General Assembly. In House District 65, attorney Seth Woodall defeated current Rep. Reece Pyrtle, and in House District 79, farmer and businessman Darren Armstrong won against current Rep. Keith Kidwell. In House District 110, pharmacist Caroline Eason secured the republican primary against Rep. Kelly Hastings, and in House District 118, Haywood County School Board member Jimmy Rogers won against Rep. Mark Pless.

Regarding the Democratic side of the aisle, in House District 106, Rev. Dr. Rodney Sadler defeated incumbent Rep. Carla Cunningham, and he will run unopposed in November. In House District 23, Patricia Smith defeated Rep. Shelly Willingham, meaning she will run against Brent Roberson to represent House District 23 this November. In House District 99, Veleria Levy won against Rep. Nasif Majeed, and she will run unopposed this November.
